The Story

Three generations. One quiet commitment.

My great-grandfather John Van Nostrand Dorr was a pioneer, an inventor, an entrepreneur, and a collaborator with Thomas Edison. He believed small sparks could ignite big change. When his work allowed it, he didn't build a monument. He built something that could keep giving.

My father, Burr carried that work forward as a trustee. I have been privileged to do the same for more than 40 years, serving in a number of roles including Vice Chair.

I have sat at the table where grant proposals are reviewed and where the question is always the same: will this make a real difference for real people?

Summer 2024

Cuttyhunk Island

Watching students board the boat with their teachers and aides, spending a full day on the island learning together. The Foundation helped make that happen. A return engagement with Buzzards Bay Coalition is planned for this summer.

2015 · Washington, CT

75th Anniversary

Trustees, families, and representatives from organizations funded over the decades gathered at Dorr Nature Lab. A reflection on what had been built, and what was still ahead. A grand event.

The Connection

Understanding both sides of the table

Four decades reviewing grant proposals from the inside. Now helping nonprofits build the relationships that keep their supporters engaged.

The Foundation Side

Reviewing proposals. Making decisions about which ideas deserve a chance. Understanding what funders actually look for.

The Outreach Side

Reviewing proposals. Making decisions about which ideas deserve a chance. Understanding what funders actually look for.

Let's Talk
